What a great question – sitting here at the beginning of 2022 wondering what the future will be like, you might well be asking yourself, and your family, if it is a good time to start an online business.
One thing the Covid pandemic has taught us is that our financial security is not something we can take for granted – EVER!

The Short Answer …
A resounding YES!There is no doubt that in my mind that the one thing the last two years has shown us is how powerful the Internet is while it is still, after all these years, very much in it’s early stages of growth.
It may be the only way to earn money in the near future – it’s certainly the best way, even now!
Why I Believe it is a Great Time to Start an Online Business.
During the pandemic lockdowns and isolations the Internet was for many:
- Our one source of information and link to the outside world.
- Our only means of shopping – whether for luxuries or necessities.
- Our means of working remotely (ie from home) – communicating with the office and customers alike.
- Our method of conducting meetings – using Zoom or Skype or similar programs.
- How we were able to educate our children if they weren’t able to go to school.
- A form of entertainment – Netflix became a common household word as did YouTube
- How we did out banking and paid our bills
- And much more …
What this has meant is that more people than ever before have come to rely on, and use, the Internet in our day to day lives.
It may not be obvious but this is a huge global mind shift and is likely to increase even after we get back to “normal” – if ever we do.
The Future Looks Bright for Online Businesses
I say this because I see no reason for online activity to reduce in any way because it is the most convenient way of doing almost everything.
Sure there will always be the need for a bit of retail therapy – going to the shops on a weekend with the family, to meet a girlfriend, to have breakfast, a cup of coffee or lunch and maybe take in a movie.
All of that is part of living – it’s what we do.
But … have you noticed we do most of this in big centralised malls?
I honestly believe, and have for some time now, that these large malls and the internet is rapidly seeing the demise of smaller “mom-‘n-pop”, brick and mortar family businesses. Pretty sad in my opinion.
When I worked in a retail camera store customers would come in and ask all sorts of questions about photography gear.
Without buying anything from the shop many of them would be back weeks later asking more questions relating to the purchase they made online. Often the very gear we had chatted about previously but that they had found to be cheaper from an online outfit.
It’s virtually impossible to compete with the likes of Amazon!
The future looks bright for all online businesses including mom-‘n-pop who can now conduct the family business from home.
Why You Should Get Your Business Online Sooner Rather Than Later
The answer to this is pretty simple – the sooner you get your business out there the better.
Google is the main Internet search engine getting 84% of of the 5,6 billion daily searches.
There are 252,000 new websites are created each day – that’s about 172 new WEBSITES per minute.
in addition to new websites about 5,000,000 posts, or new pages of content, are added to existing websites each day.
Quite astounding figures!
Google’s function is to provide their users with the most relevant and useful information and they place emphasis on older websites.
The reason for this is that only 17% of websites are active or current!
Google looks at all new websites and relegates them to the end of the queue (as far as rankings in searches goes) to see if they are serious contenders or not.
What this means is that even if you have the prettiest website in the world with the best ever vegan mayonnaise recipe Google is going to wait and see if you are going to be around in 6 months or a year.
Once you have stood the test of time your website will start moving up the rankings in searches.
It’s a simpe philosophy that makes a lot of sense based on historical activity.
The sooner you get your online business up and running the sooner it will start ranking – but it won’t be overnight.
You will need to keep active on your website through adding contents, updating pages, blogging regularly, engaging with customers and accumulating traffic (views).
More on this activity and ranking in later posts.
A Final Word on Starting an Online Business Today
I would highly recommend starting an online business today.
Yesterday would have been better to be ahead of those 252,000 pages created in the last 24 hours, some of whom are probably your competition!
It doesn’t matter if you are going back to a full time job eventually or are currently working – think to the future.
And consider this …
Just imagine what your situation would have been if pre-pandemic you had an up-and-running online business that was already providing you with a regular income.
Would it have made a difference to you and your family?
I suspect it would have …
